The Maryland state-champion youth baseball team from Boyds defeated New England on Wednesday, the final day of pool play for the 2012 Cal Ripken World Series.

The team's 6-0 win at Cal. Sr. Yard in Aberdeen, MD, came after rain delayed what was supposed to be a Tuesday showdown.

Jake Heskett kept the New England team, from Newtown, CT, off the board during his six innings of work, allowing only five hits, one walk and striking out 10. The Maryland state champs had seven hits, including three extra base hits. John Walsh racked up four RBIs on two hits for Boyds, homered in the third inning and singled in the fifth inning, according to a recap provided to Patch.

The top four domestic and international teams will compete for a championship slot when playoffs begin Friday.
