Charity Race Honors Fallen Northwest Grad, College Football Player

The inaugural Derek T. Sheely Lead the Way four-mile race and one-mile walk is June 2 at Northwest High School. Proceeds will go toward concussion and brain injury research.

A four-mile race has been planned in honor of a college football player from Germantown who died last year from a brain injury.

The inaugural Derek T.  Sheely Lead the Way 4.0-Mile Race and 1-Mile Walk is scheduled for June 2 at Northwest High School. Proceeds will go toward concussion and brain injury research, according to the Derek Sheely Foundation, the group organizing the race.

Sheely, a 22-year-old alumnus of Northwest, was a fullback at Frostburg State University when he suffered a brain injury during a practice on Aug. 22, 2011. Sheely died on Aug. 28, nearly one week later, Patch reported.

The foundation emerged to raise awareness about concussions and head injuries. Sheely’s mother, Kristen Sheely, is the foundation’s executive director. More information about the race is available on the organization’s website, TheDerekSheelyFoundation.org.
