Forecast: County Faces $71 Million Budget Gap in 2014
County officials blamed the bad economy, increased costs in health benefits for retirees and the $30 million needed to meet state funding requirements for Montgomery County Public Schools.
Early projections forecast a $71 million budget shortfall for 2014 public services in Montgomery County, part of the fiscal plan the Montgomery County Council adopted Tuesday.
County officials blamed the bad economy, increased costs in health benefits for retirees and the $30 million needed to meet state funding requirements for Montgomery County Public Schools, county records show.
County officials declined to say whether they would raise taxes or make cuts to close the gap, according to The Washington Post.
On Monday, the council’s government operations committee voted unanimously to recommend the 2013-18 fiscal plan.
County staff will update the summary in December.

Maybe if the county wasn't so illegal immigrant friendly we could save some money.

I wonder when and how this "budget gap" was calculated. Since the State of Maryland just increased income taxes and Montgomery County gets 3.2 % of the State tax, it may be that the projected "budget gap" will be different as we get closer to the 2014 budget. Since 3.2 % is the highest rate in the State, I guess any "tax increases" will fall on the property owners or the residents of Montgomery County will need to suffer further cuts to services.

Is there a study comparing county salaries and pensions with those of private industry? Help us find out why this has occurred.

The budget is a joke. The County Council refuses to make difficult choices and continues the spending at "business as usual" levels. Well, the one-party state of Montgomery County is now reaching the limits of taxation, and since the county can't print money (thank god) the spending will have to be brought under control. We are looking at moving to DC because the taxes are less there! When the last taxpayer moves to Florida or Delaware who will be around to fund the wonderful benefits "won" by the public employee unions?
