Free Speech and The Abortion Debate: How Far is Too Far?

Do the actions of anti-abortion, abortion rights advocates cross the line?

In what he said was response to inappropriate tactics of anti-abortion protestors, Todd Stave, the landlord of the Germantown clinic that rents to abortion practitioner LeRoy Carhart, has been calling the homes of anti-abortion protestors, Voice of Choice.

Patch reported on Voice of Choice in September 2011, a plan Stave hatched shortly after anti-abortion protestors staged a rally outside his child’s middle school.

The topic is back in the news again — The Baltimore Sun picked up the story in light of a recent lecture Stave gave at a Baltimore-area community college, reopening the discussion of First Amendment Rights and whether those on both sides of the issue have crossed the line.

Some Background

Germantown has been nudged into the broader debate over abortion ever since the arrival of Carhart in 2010. Carhart is one of the few doctors in the U.S. to openly perform late-term abortions. As a result, his office on Wisteria Drive has drawn supporters and protesters, notably the Summer of Mercy 2.0 and the Celebration of Choice last year.

How Far is Too Far?

When it comes to public discourse, debate and executing your rights to free speech, how far is too far? Is calling the homes opponents crossing the line? Is protesting outside the school of the abortion practitioner’s landlord’s child going too far?

The focus in this matter should be keep on what abortionist Carhart does in his abortuary in Germantown. He kills viable, healthy human beings for a huge fee; he is a hired killer.

In doing his killing Carhart endangers the mothers physically, including hemorrhage, infection, sterility, pieces of the baby left in the womb which must be removed by physicians and even death.

Carhart endangers the psychological health of the mother's he aborts including depression, substance abuse and suicide.

Carhart by killing their babies and terminating the pregnancy also raises the mother's risk of breast cancer later in life. This is always a trauma to mothers as it can cause disfigurement and even death.

Carhart also raises the risk of the mother's he aborts of having a preterm delivery in subsequent pregnancies. This in turn raises the risk of the baby suffering mental impairment, autism, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Carhart not only kills, he punishes the next generation.

The killing of an innocent human being and the harm it does to the mothers of the babies being killed is what should stay in focus and it should not be tolerated by caring people.

Abortion is a polarizing issue. This post wasn't really meant to be a discussion of whether it's good or bad ... who's "for" or "against." What I am wondering — regardless of where you might fall on this issue — is if the message winds up getting lost in the delivery of the message.

I will support free speech until the end of time, but (in my humble opinion) going to the landlord's child's school is completely too far. Calling the homes of individuals supporting opposing views is crossing the line too.

While I don't personally support the Anti-Choice platform, I absolutely support their right to peaceful protest. I hope in the future all sides of this highly debated issue will consider choosing to express their beliefs in a way that is not harmful to others.

Abortion is a free choice as well as a private choice. It is not for anyone to judge other than the person making that choice. The message does get lost in the chaos of protestors who think their way is the only way. Radical protesting and rallys at a childs school is extreme and uncalled for, which further proves that one should mind their own business!!

Killing another human being is never a "free choice" it is at least a homicide. It is never a private matter to kill another human being.

Mr. Naughton is spot-on. The real action that is "going too far" and "extreme and uncalled for" is the murder of tiny babies. That is never a "private choice" anymore than the murder of any older person. I join him in saying that we will not be sucked into attempts to get us to stifle the truth and to do all we can to protect the little ones.

"The message does get lost in the chaos of protestors who think their way is the only way. " Marlow, when I think of "the way" these children are brutally killed everything else is minimal. Let's focus on the big picture: The LITTLE children Killing children for ANY reason is ALWAYS wrong!!! When are ADULT children going to see the
role they play in this BIG picture. We are ALL children of GOD. We need to do what needs to get done to legally close this late-term abortion mill. It is God whom we need to be worried about offending.

When is killing a child permitted in the eyes of God?

Let's see if I have this right. Ripping a baby's body apart is okay, but peacefully protesting outside the school the killer's child attends is "going too far?"

The child is completely innocent in all of this, regardless of her father's choices and how you feel about them.

You are such a small minded person making 'stupid comments' nonstop. His child should not suffer for what he does. You are a cruel and vicious woman, who lives a very angry lazy life. Get a real job!

Todd Stave's daughter is not responsible for her father's reprehensible business practices. So protesting outside the poor child's school is unfair to her - and it dilutes the pro-life message.

We need to focus on the babies whose lives are being snuffed out. We should not launch ad hominem attacks on our opposition - or their children - since that is not the way of conversion.

LeRoy Cahart has been killing babies in Germantown for far too long. More than a year of peacful protest has not removed this blight on our community.

By all means, we should continue the non-violent and legal protests at the abortuary - but "this kind can only come out by prayer and fasting".

LeRoy Cahart and Todd Stave practice their wicked business with full protection of Man's law. So our fasting has to be to spurn Man's law. For those who are able, it is time to break Man's law and trespass at the abortuary to save the babies.

Believe it or not there is room for compromise. However, as long as we continue to foster hate and violence around this issue we will never get to the point where we can discuss such things.

Todd, there is no room for compromise. Remember, you make money from a man who rips preborn children limb from limb, and then crushes their heads before he "delivers" them from the mother (many in the 2nd or 3rd trimester, some who would be perfectly healthy if they were delivered alive).

We are talking about the killing of innocent children. Whether the protests were right or wrong, there is no question that what Leroy Carhart does is morally wrong. This can all end in a moment, when GRHS shuts down and Carhart no longer comes to our great state of Maryland to kill our most vulnerable citizens.

Renting space to an abortionist who rips up living babies seems to me the very essence of fostering hate and violence, Mr. Stave.

What if Patch hosted a Huffington Post style debate where each side gets to represent a researched position on the issue and readers voted on which side was more convincing?

Protesting outside the school of the abortion practitioner's landlord's child is going too far. Todd Stave's 12 year old daughter is innocent. The killing of three 12 year olds (who would have been 12 years old in the year 2024) is going too far. Those three, who were killed in Germantown, Maryland, on Mother's Day evening by Leroy Carhart, were innocent. You asked, "how far is too far?" Is what we are doing, going too far? Yes, in killing innocent babies, we are going too far. Let's tighten the loose laws in the state of Maryland so that we will no longer be guilty of this atrocity!

Bora,

I presented a paper showing that the preborn are human beings from conception and a pro abortion person presented the usual arguments to justify abortion to the Montgomery College Philosophy Club a couple of years ago at the request of a clinic escort. When I finished one of the students compared gestation of the preborn
to baking a cake and said it is not human until the cake is done.

This is after I had reviewed over 150 years of physicians biologists and beneticists, including Alan Guttmacher, saying the baby was a human being from conception, presenting the physical evidence of sonography, the proof from embryonic stem cell research, the statements of leading abortion proponents, the proof of invitro fertilization, disease elimination and sex selection prior to implanting a conceptous in the womb and complex fetal surgery, including spina bifida and diaphragmatic hernia repair. People that are pro abortion don't change their minds when presented with the proof that abortion kills a human being. They adhere to the the fabrication that the preborn are just amass of tissue to rationalize the killing.

Finally, killing a preborn human being is not a matter to be voted; it is a grotesque action, mostly done at the insistence of the father, to be rejected and stopped.

A postscript on Sen. Ben Cardin's using the Zimmerman/Martin case to promote his anti-racial bill in the Senate.

Ben, now that the medical reports are public when are you going to apologize to your constituents for your sleazy behavior on this issue?

Wow such extremist views from aLl of you. A little wacky if you ask me, no one hears you or cares what you have to say. Freedom of choice is here to stay regardless of your extremism, deal with it! Interesting to see that even all the pro-lifers also argue amongst each other.

Trying to protect and save the lives of the preborn is never "extremist." Try to stay on point: the preborn, even perfectly normal and viable preborn, are being violently and painfully killed by Leroy Carhart abetted by Todd Stave and somehow you think it is "wacky" to try to stop it?
That is extremism!

I hear that Leroy Carhart performs D&E abortions. Go to http://www.nrlc.org/abortion/pba/DEabortiongraphic.html to see the violence of a D&E abortion. That is extreme! Are you doing anything to stop it?

As most people are aware, Carhart also kills babies in Nebraska. He has been implicated in at least one death (Christine Gilbert). On March 31, a woman suffered a botched abortion at his Nebraska clinic, quite possibly at the hands of Carhart himself. See http://www.operationrescue.org/archives/911-moans-screams-heard-from-botched-abortion-victim-at-carharts-nebraska-clinic/ and do pay attention to the youtube video, as it contains the recording of the transcript of the abortuary staff's conversation with the local 911 dispatcher. You can hear the woman moan and even scream in the background. Abortion, by definition is "going too far" as it entails the murder of a baby and sometimes of the mother herself.

Mr. Stave, will there be "room for compromise" when this scene is played out in the facility that you and your sister own? Note I said "when" and not "if", for that is merely a matter of time.
