Germantown Doctor Fuels Anti-Abortion, Pro-Abortion Rights Debate
Anti-abortion, pro-abortion rights groups plan separate rallies in Germantown July 30-Aug. 7 in support of conflicting causes.
Starting Saturday, anti-abortion and pro-abortion rights groups will converge in Germantown, once again making the sleepy, suburban community the focal point for the broader abortion debate.
At the center is late-term abortion provider Dr. LeRoy Carhart, whose office has drawn the attention of abortion and pro-choice advocates ever since December 2010, when Carhart announced his plans to leave Nebraska and open a practice in Germantown.
Anti-abortion protestors with Operation Rescue and Maryland Coalition for Life group have planned to launch on Saturday, what it’s calling the Summer of Mercy 2.0, a week of prayer vigils, speakers and rallying scheduled through Sunday, Aug. 7, according to the group’s website.
Pro-abortion rights supporters, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, plans to stage its own rallies— Summer of Celebration of Choice, which begins with a walk Sunday, July 31, and events scheduled throughout the week, though the organization has said on its website that it is not intended to be a counter protest.
There have been numerous anti-abortion protests in Germantown ever since Carhart established his office, including a rally in January, whose timing was meant to coincide with the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 court ruling that made abortion legal in the United States.
Anti-abortion groups argue that Maryland has become a safe haven for abortion and have established an office across the street from Carhart’s, Patch has reported. Operation Rescue has also filed a complaint against Carhart with the Maryland Board of Physicians in April. When reached by Patch, a spokesperson with the Maryland Board of Physicians would not comment.
In his first extensive interview since he started working in Germantown, Carhart told The Washington Post that an attorney was handling the complaint. He also said in the article that he planned to expand his services to include adoption counseling, HIV/AIDS screening and preventative health services for lesbians, gay men and people who are transgender.

Well, I'm glad Maryland is a safe haven for abortion. Women should have a safe place to receive this type of medical care.

The only safe haven for abortion is ninety miles south of Miami, Fl. Havana, Cuba.

You are not only hateful but extremely ignorant about how powerful Planned Parenthood and NARAL are in the U.S.!!
For instance, in CT alone, cities like New "Haven" and Hartford and Bridgeport have very busy and PROFITABLE abortuaries operated by Planned *Un-Parenthood* and other businesses.

I think these people are evil!!!! I had to explain abortion to my 7 and 8 year old this morning on the way to camp because they saw pictures of dead babies!!!! I don't care what they believe in, but don't subject young children to those pictures!!!! This is wrong on every level. These people don't have compassion for kids!!!!

This is exactly how I feel Joanna! I don't care how you feel but those pictures should be considered vulgar! Those people are a public nuisance!

Excuse me???! People who are spending their time and money and efforts trying to save the lives of unborn babies are "evil"??
What kind of parent cannot see the ridiculous irony of your post preaching of "compassion for kids," when your heart seems untouched by any compassion for the INNOCENT LIVES taken--some 50 million of them since Roe--before they even take their first breath outside the womb?

Those unborn babies you want to save... yea... their parents don't want them - thus the abortion. Do you honestly prefer to have these children be born to parents who do not want them?? And don't feed me that crap about adoption. They don't get adopted. They get raised by parents who never wanted them and resent them, at best and worst case is that they're abused and neglected. There are hundreds of thousands of kids in foster care (or not) and they age out of the system never to be adopted. Until you fix that you need to mind your own uterus.

Why the hate, viciousness and derision? You "ladies" must be members/employees of NARAL and Planned Parenthood. :-(
I am against abortion being *used as birth control*!! You evidently are not.
As to adoption, I am one of millions of married women who had wanted to adopt a baby, but they are almost never available (in the U.S.) to adopt BECAUSE the young unmarried girls and women get WELFARE to *keep the babies* instead of making adoption plans for them!!
That government SUBSIDY of dependency upon *government* as "DADDY" is the REAL problem!! I KNOW--my husband and I have been licensed foster parents, through the state.

You wanted to adopt? My cousin is a foster parent who has been able to adopt plenty of children. A women has a right to control her own body. CTPati, whom I have debated before, is most inerested in defending the system no matter what. Her biggest worry is that her stocks and bonds will become worthless pieces of paper. She want to take children away from their parents so that they can be placed in orphanages. For her this is the most economical way to bring up working class children since our only porpose in life is to feed parisites like herself.

She's odd.
I am pro-life for myself and pro-choice for others. I have enough to contend with in my own life than to take on a cause that's truly about someone's personal decision.

Many might consider Monica "odd," as in not standing on principle--the principle that LIFE is sacred--or having situational ethics.
Do you believe in honesty for you, but it's okay for others to lie and steal? Do you believe in faithfulness to your husband, but it's okay for him to "get some" on the side?

Monica, you have a very *limited* vocabulary.
It is duly noted that you are unable to answer very pertinent questions about life, moral values, integrity and principle.
But have a nice day!

These protesters with the graphic splattered baby parts posters are most definitely a public nuisance. I have to drive by them in the mornings to get my daughters to summer camp/daycare. I think they are highly innapropriate and too graphic for young children to be exposed to. It is now my choice to take another route to avoid these ODD people. I also don't appreciate the idiot driving the service truck with the posters on it going 5 miles per hour down Wisteria Drive blocking and delaying traffic.

Before it was safe and legal it was unsafe and illegal for working class women. Those with money needed only to go to another country for a safe abortion. If you couldn't afford Pan Am there was a back alley abortionist. Just like gambling and drugs. If it isn't legal than there is the black market. In fact some women still end up in the back alley because of the cost or lack of an legal abortion provider in their area. They have been successful because they have been chipping away at abortion rights while the AFL-CIO leadership has refused to fight for the working class as a whole. Their goal is to require women to become baby factories. So do not expect them to stop with abortions because they could care less if a women dies. After all she will get their pie in the sky. If they succeed next it will be birth control methods and then the equal pay for equal work concept. These "Wrong to Lifers" use intimidation, murder, and big mouths like Bill O'Reily for their cause. Many Doctors won't preform abortions because they know that they can become a target of domestic terrorism. Like Bill O'Riely's characterization of Dr. Tiller as "Tiller the killer." Dr. Tiller was assassinated outside of his Church on a Sunday morning. It was the second attempt. The first assassination attempt only wounded him. He wore a button that said,"Trust Women".

I am appalled as well. The law permits abortion and that should be respected. It is a personal choice and we should be lucky to have choices. There are many reasons that people choose to have an abortion, some well outside of their control, but it is their choice, that is the great thing about out country, we get to choose!
I refuse to drive this road because of the inflammatory and provocative photos that are posted up and down the road. As mentioned by someone else I drove down this road with my children and had to ask them to look away as we discussed what was there.
The overtones and comments about women going on welfare to have kids is absurd,. Honestly, do you believe the trash you spew. I love those who are "moral and spiritual" people who are intolerant and overtly aggressive towards those with differing opinions.
While I am not for abortion, I am for people making their own decisions about their bodies.

Once again a group of people are outside on Wisteria employing scare tactics with graphical posts and "frightening" signs. It is sickening to see school age kids there clinging to bloody posts and their brain-dead parents, skipping school and having even less information about what is there here to do…But, really…by all means, people go protests, but for goodness sake please keep those awesome posters in your homes on your walls and not outside where my children can see them !!
Is there anything that can be done on legislative level to allow people to have a morning drive to work without being subjected to this ??

Truth is those posters are appalling, and I don't even think that is the best way to reach people. It turns people off. But if you consider for just a second that those are real babies who can feel pain (after 20 weeks - the type of abortions dr. Carhart does in gtown) then it may be easier to understand why people feel
compelled to show them. As for unwanted children, I think it's fair for the child to have a say in whether he or she wants to live or die-- do I want to be brutally injected with a lethal drug to stop my heart and dismembered when I can feel the pain or do I want to live even if it may not be an easy life? If you ask that question to an adult, we will most likely go with life over being dismembered, even if we won't feel loved at times. And yes, a woman's body holds the baby, but does that make it only her choice? Why should one life and one woman's choice completely trump another life (who will also possibly grow up to be a woman)? These questions should haunt us, because this isn't just about politics or a theoretical debate, this is about life or death for a person, and oftentimes that death is painful.

The reason a womens life trumps the life of a fetus is because a fetus is not a person yet but the women is. Having an abortion is a decision that only a women should make in consultation with her Doctor. Its a decision that should belong exclusively to her not a priest, policeman, judge, husband, father, or brother.
They are going after this right like other rights because the world capitalist system is in crisis. More and more the capitalists demand that workers do as told and work under any conditions and pay as their employer sees fit.
