Kensington-based Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers International Union overwhelmingly votes against proposal.
KENSINGTON — The labor union that helps Hostess Brands produce the popular treats Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Snoballs and Cupcakes, has overwhelmingly rejected a contract offer, a failure to reach agreement that could jeopardize efforts to bring the company out of bankruptcy.
In January, Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy for the second time in 10 years due to a $900 million debt load, according to a recent story in the Sacramento Bee.
On Aug. 14, Hostess presented the Bakery, Confection, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union—located on Connecticut Avenue in Kensington—with a proposal to get the company out of bankruptcy. Yesterday, the union rejected the proposal by a 92 percent margin, the story stated.
In a statement on its website, union President Frank Hurt said, “Our members have seen this company squander more than $50 million that it was contractually obligated to put towards our members’ pension. They have seen the company fail to invest in product development and new plant and equipment as was promised when the company emerged from its previous bankruptcy and for which our members made significant concessions.”
The union seeks the restoration of $50 million in pension contributions and for Hostess Brands to “come to the bargaining table with a fair and reasonable proposal for its workers and a legitimate business plan,” the article said.

The unions president is convincing their members to forsake all while he has nothing to lose. If they strike they lose their jobs and any unemployment benifits. Easy for him.

Nasario all these people that work here are grown men and women who can come to there own decisions!! 92% is an overwhelming number. I myself am a Teamster employee of Hostess in route sales. Our vote was pretty much 50/50, so there are a lot of people not happy with what was put in front of us. As it stands from my point of view we as a group in Worcester, Ma make in the range of 11.50 to 17.00 an hour depending on your route and hours worked. Starting pay for a route salesman is roughly 41,000 per yr in this area, far below industry standards for a alleged top tier company. This company is poorly poorly managed and owned by hedge fund and financial companies that at the end of the daycare about the $. Not the employee or the facilities equipment they use. This plan calls to save 200 million over 5 years for a company that is almost 1 billion dollars in debt. Makes no sense and is a strategy to make the company or it's brands more appealing to buyers, that's all!! It's only a matter of time before it's sold off! We gave back 7,500 a year 2 years ago in the last bankruptcy and now they want to take another 4000 plus a year just in salary with additional contributions to our health and no savings plan. This vote was not to strike; we voted to strike back in March. This vote was: Yes or No for this contract that I'm forcing down your throat and saying take it or leave it! Majority of us say NO take it back and give us a better offer or close the doors like you said you would!

well this contract if good for 5 years its better to have 5 years to look for another job than weeks or months rather than giving up a paycheck and unemployment. I agree that Hostess screwed up but for the sake of others and ourselves lets take the cuts and buy us more time for a better opportunity here or elsewhere. I too have been working for hostess for 8 years, as a 3rd party distributor which is a risk in itself i have no benefits nor back up if i were to get hurt, in this economy its tough to have time gaps of income, all im saying is at least buy more time for us to find another job if thats what people desire, but by shutting it down is plain stupid.

Yeah j money me too!! But yeah take the contract while you look for another job, that's what they all said last time! At some point we really need to stand up for ourselves, otherwise it will happen again and again!! What good is a union if we keep losing. I'm pretty sure the judge won't impose the contract on the bakers given the total number of no votes; not just with the bakers but the overall votes for NO! Given the recent history of the company he'll tell Rayburn to give a better offer or move on! So the pressure is clearly in him right now

Thanks for the perspective on both sides of the fence. Why is corporate America so incompetent anymore? Know what is coming next? Business buyouts from the Chinese.

I apreciate how many of you are willing to demand more from a company that is tanking. How about this, be a business man and grow your route so you can make more. Work hard to move up. Save your own dang money for retirement. I spent three years beating myself half to death to build my route up and now I make good money and all of you would just take that away from my family. Thanks guys, way to be resonsible for your own life, and success.

I agree take control of your future. I too have taken An 8500 route over 4 years ago. And with hard work and commitment built it to a 12 - 13.500 wk rt. but yes it dowse suck to keep taking these steps forward always to be kicked down. But finally all the lazy asses need to put in more than 3. -4 hrs a day on a route to make money.
