Report: Fatal Crash in Clarksburg Weather-Related

(Updated 8:18 p.m.) A two-car crash that killed a 66-year-old woman Monday in Clarksburg was weather-related, The Washington Post reports.

Medical examiner David Fowler reportedly told The Post, "'If not for the storm' the accident would not have occurred ... ."

Mai Lam-Phan was killed after a Nissan struck her vehicle head-on on Frederick Road. The driver and the passenger of the Nissan were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman, said the storm may have been a possible cause but said investigators did not have an official determination, Patch and several news outlets have reported.

(Updated 5:16 p.m.) A 66-year-old woman was killed in a two-car crash Monday afternoon in Clarksburg, Montgomery County police said.

Mai Lam-Phan of the 12900 block of Benton Park Circle was driving a 2003 Jaguar sedan north on Frederick Road. For reasons still under investigation, a Nissan Pathfinder traveling south crossed the double-yellow center line and struck the Jaguar near Brink Road, according to police.

Police and emergency rescuers responded to the crash at 11:38 a.m. Lam-Phan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Pathfinder’s driver, Joshua Jose Munoz, 19, of the 18100 block of Coachmans Road in Germantown, and a 16-year-old passenger were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

While police haven’t determined if the crash was weather-related, Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman, said it was a possibility given witness accounts that indicated there was "a lot of water” at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

(Original) Montgomery County police Monday responded to a deadly crash in Clarksburg, at the intersection of Frederick and Brink roads, a police spokeswoman told Patch.

The crash involved two vehicles; one person has died, MCP Officer Rebecca Innocenti said.

Two other people were transported to a local trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt said.

Further details were unavailable.

Crews responded at around 11:30 a.m., according to police.

Brink Road was shut down at Ridge Road, due to the crash. Frederick Road was shut down at Brink Road.

Though police had not yet determined whether this collision was storm-related, state and county officials have been urging motorists to stay off the roads as Hurricane Sandy-induced rains and wind sweep through the region.

NBC4 reporter Trisha Thompson, who was on the scene, reported via Twitter that there was water in the roadway. "Don't know cause yet but a lot of water on the road," the tweet read.

Montgomery County officials have already closed several roads due to the storm.
