Looking down the comments it may be a good time to remind folks that drug prohibition is one of the biggest disasters in US history. It is rare when people argue policy to have such a clear precedent as we do with the disaster of alcohol prohibition.

Just as smart teatotalers rightly condemned alcohol prohibition, sensible people who don't use drugs also will eventually realize that drug prohibition is a mess. Consider the violent gangs and crooked police that controlled alcohol. And the army of police that was needed to fight the war against it, all riding on the taxpayers' shoulders. And look now at the sale of alcohol, and how ordinary, non-violent people produce, market and sell it. It is better and cheaper, and the massive hidden costs and violence are gone.

The drug war is the same, only MUCH more expensive. End drug prohibition and enjoy:
1. HUGE relief for the taxpayer
2. the immediate end of most urban violence
3. cheaper, safer drugs not cut with rat poison and such
4. a HUGE cut in crime to fund drug habits
5. a minor increase in drug use, if any (I'm not about to start shooting heroin if it becomes legal, will you?)
6. a MAJOR, healthy improvement in police-citizen relations, in the cities especially
