Visions for Vacancies: Borders

What would you like to see at the old Borders bookstore building?

It’s been almost a year since Borders announced it would be shuttering its bookstores, leaving Germantown residents without a place in town to buy books.

For some, the death of the beloved bookshop signified what was already known: Brick-and-mortar bookstores had long ago lost their mojo; it’s time to join the e-book revolution. Other bibliophiles blamed the rise of the e-book for the chain’s demise and felt a world without paper books was the beginning of the end for print publishers.

Regardless of where you fall in the e-book vs. corner bookstore debate, the Borders bookstore at Milestone Center is no longer. The Germantown Borders has bitten the dust.

If you could decide, what sort of business would occupy this property? Another bookshop? Something else? Post your suggestions in the comments section below.

I would welcome a venue similar to 918 F Street downtown. They host a variety of events from cooking and painting classes, to exhibitions and tastings. It would be nice to have someplace more interactive, akin to Busboys and Poets, that was not as pricy as Strathmore and Black Rock.

@Da Truth, so kind of a coffee-shop, bookstore, performance venue, exhibit space mash-up? That could be cool.

How about a restaurant, that area doesn't have many, but no fast food

@Tiffany, yes - there are places like Torpedo Factory in VA, but we don't have that in MoCo. Given all the artisans and performers we have locally, it would be standing room only.
