DESCRIPTION:The Maryland Science Center&rsquo\;s Backyard Science Days re
 turns Saturday\, August 11 and Sunday\, August 12 from 12-4 p.m. featuri
 ng Rob Mies\, Director of the Organization for Bat Conservation\, and fl
 ying\, furry\, fanged friends.\nRob&rsquo\;s performances explain the be
 nefits these famed and feared winged wonders. Visitors will meet tiny fr
 uit bats of Asia and Africa\, North America&rsquo\;s Big Brown bat and e
 ven spend some quality time with Camilla\, the Malaysian Flying Fox with
  a six-foot wingspan. Cameras will flash and eyes will widen as Rob brin
 gs his bats through the crowd\, just inches from guests.\nThe Maryland P
 ark Service&rsquo\;s Scales and Tales program will also be on hand with 
 exciting\, Maryland-native creatures including snakes\, turtles and rapt
 ors (birds of prey). The Maryland Ornithological Society&rsquo\;s &ldquo
 \;study skins&rdquo\; of once-living birds will give visitors an appreci
 ation for still-living members of the same species.\nFamilies will desig
 n and race vegetables-on-wheels in the always-popular Veggie Racing\, la
 unch stomp rockets\, make solar art and get crafty with the Maryland Nat
 ive Plant Society.
