Expose Your Kids to Local Literature

Maryland authors of children's books

A child can never have too many books, and there’s no better way to encourage a little one’s love of reading and writing than by sharing with them the publications of local authors. Kids will be inspired knowing that someone from their home state of Maryland wrote the book that is in their hands – plus, local writers mean more opportunities to meet the author in person.

If you’re in search of a new bedtime tale or story time reading material, consider these Maryland authors and their books:

Fun with … math?
If your child enjoys their numbers or especially if they’re resistant to anything numerical, Maryland high school teacher Ann McCallum’s math fairytales make this often-dreaded subject more than entertaining. Eat Your Math Homework, her newest book, offers a tasty way to make friends with fractions and more. The Secret Life of Math marries history and math, while Rabbits, Rabbits Everywhere simplifies the Fibonacci sequence.

Get the ghost
For the spooky story lover in your life, there are the suspenseful ghost stories and mysteries written by former children’s librarian, Mary Downing Hahn. Aimed at children and teens, books such as Wait Till Helen Comes and All the Lovely Bad Ones will have your kids’ imaginations working on overdrive. But don’t worry: Her books just like to offer a good chill, they’re not trying to scare the daylights out of your little ones.

Great just the way you are
The picture books of Pam Smallcomb offer fabulous romps, humor, and fresh takes on the dynamics of everyday relationships between friends and family. I’m Not is her newest work and offers slapstick scenarios to help kids accept who they are, without feeling like they’re not as good as others. Older readers will love her duo of Trimoni Twins books and The Last Burp of Mac McGerp.

Politician in the Making
You can’t ignore politics when you live on the outskirts of the nation’s capital. Thankfully, Syl Sobel simplifies the ins and outs of government and history with his books about Presidential Elections, The Declaration of Independence and The Bill of Rights.

Calling All Nature Lovers
Susan Stockdale is an author and illustrator of picture books for kids that celebrate nature. Bring on the Birds is a colorful, rhyming selection that will mesmerize the youngest of book-goers and enchant older kids with facts about these avian friends. Fabulous Fishes offers adventures about water nymphs, while Nature’s Paintbrush teaches kids how animals blend into their environment.
