Grab & Go Kids Planner: March 2 - 8

A summary of this week's best bets for Germantown families.

Get ready for the Mardi Gras parade and don't forget to celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday!  Here are Germantown's best bets for families this week:

CAN WE TALK? (PARENT ACADEMY WORKSHOP)
Where/When: Neelsville Middle School, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Why Go: The Parents Advisory Council designed this workshop to teach parents how to advocate for their children within the Montgomery County Public School system.  Information will be presented in both English and Spanish.
Pricing: Free!


Where/When: Discovery Sports Center, Thursday (and next Monday) from 10 a.m. until noon. 
Why Go: It's still rainy and muddy outside and your kids need a place to run around.  Bring your riding toys and balls and enjoy the open indoor space. 
Pricing: Kids up to 11 months are free; $2 per child ages 1 through 10.

PRESCHOOL SONGS AND STORIES
Where/When: Gaithersburg Arts Barn in the Kentlands, Thursday from 11 to 11:45 a.m.  Story times will be held every first and third Thursday of the month through June 2011. 
Why Go: Children ages 3 to 5 enjoy singing, dancing and listening to stories.     
Pricing: Free! 

OPEN GYM CLINICS
Where/When: Hills Gymnastics in Gaithersburg, weekdays from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. and Sunday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Why Go: Kids love to run and tumble on real gymnastics equipment.  Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.  
Pricing: $8 per child on weekdays, $13 per child on Sundays.

MCPOM SPRING CONSIGNMENT EVENT
Where/When: Roberto Clemente Middle School, Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; closed from 11:30 a.m. until noon, most items half-price after 12 p.m.
Why Go: The Montgomery County Parents of Multiples consignment events are great places to stock up on gently-used kids' clothing, equipment and supplies.      
Pricing: $2 per adult, plus the cost of purchases.

BEAUTIFUL BLUEBIRDS
Where/When: Black Hill Nature Center, Saturday from noon until 1 p.m.
Why Go:  Take your older children (for ages 10 and up) to learn about these special native birds.  Learn how to build and monitor your own bluebird nesting box.  Call 301-528-3492 for registration information.  (Note: if you're over age 11 and want to be a bluebird monitor for the park, plan to come an hour earlier and drop an email to Denise.Gibbs@MontgomeryParks.org before the meeting.)  
Pricing: $2 per person; $1 for Friends of Black Hill.


Where/When: Rockville Town Square, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
Why Go: Start your Saturday with a family-friendly parade and live music - complete with beads and masks - to celebrate Mardi Gras.  Kids will enjoy arts & crafts, balloon hats and the moon bounce.
Pricing: Free!

READ ACROSS AMERICA KIDS EVENT
Where/When: Borders in the Neelsville Shopping Center, Saturday at 2 p.m. 
Why Go: Kids ages 6 to 10 are invited to enjoy stories, games, arts & crafts to celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday.  Call 301-528-0862 for more information.
Pricing: Free!

STEPPING STONES STORY TIME
Where/When: Damascus Public Library, Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Why Go:  Damascus Public Library is known for fun, interactive story times.  This event is for newborns through age 5 and their parents or caregivers; children ages 3 to 5 may attend by themselves.  For more information, call 240-773-9444.
