It's Time For Apple Picking

The trees are 'full' at Lewis Orchards, in Dickerson, Md.

Looking to pick some apples this weekend? Lewis Orchards is ready for you.

“We’ve had an excellent crop of apples this year," said Linda Lewis, co-owner. "All of our trees are full.”

Lewis said that Empire, Yellow Delicious, Fuji, Cameo and Suncrisp apples can be purchased pre-picked in the farm market.  Pink Lady, Fuji, Stayman, Cameo and Suncrisp are the apple varieties available to be picked by the public.

“The Suncrisps and Cameo are ready to go," said Lewis. "The others will follow with this nice, cool weather."

Suncrisps are best for applesauce, pies and baked apples, according to Lewis.  Cameo is a good all-purpose apple, great for use in salads, pies, applesauce, baked apples or eaten fresh.

Lewis expects to have pick-your-own apples available for the next three weeks, perhaps as long as a month.  However, she wants her customers to come prepared.

"In the first two weekends in October, we'll have the pumpkin cannon going," said Lewis.  "It might be loud in the pick-your-own patch."

Lewis Orchards is located at 18901 Peachtree Road in Dickerson. You can pick-your-own apples every day, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the next three weeks (subject to availability). The farm market is open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. until Halloween; after Halloween, it's open 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. until the day before Thanksgiving.  For more information, call 301-349-4101.
