Plum Gar Ribbon Cutting is Saturday

Officials will officially unveil the bigger, better recreation center serving east Germantown.

Local leaders will unveil a Germantown community center’s multimillion-dollar facelift during a ceremonial ribbon cutting Saturday.

Plum Gar Community Recreation Center reopens more than twice as big, with the gym as the only trace of the old structure.

The new building’s amenities include a game and exercise rooms, a 150-seat social hall, a catering kitchen and a computer lab.

The renovations cost $8.5 million, Patch reported back in January during the rec center’s ground breaking.

The overhaul was budgeted in the county’s capital improvement projects list for 2011-16, with $8.2 million coming from General Obligation bonds and $250,000 from state aid, according to information provided the county’s General Services Division.

State Sen. Nancy J. King (D-Dist. 39, Montgomery County), chairwoman of the senate’s Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families, was instrumental in getting the state funds.

The site has remained relatively unchanged since Montgomery County acquired Plum Gar from the Housing Opportunities Commission in 1986, according to county staff.

Plum Gar has been closed since 2010 pending updates.
