‘FRÄULEIN MARIA’
Choreographer Doug Elkins re-imagines the music from ‘The Sound of Music’ through the edgier idiom of modern and contemporary movement. The American Dance Institute production debuts Saturday, May 21, but there’s a VIP dress rehearsal/champagne cast party Friday, May 20.

‘Old School’ meets middle school
Old school Revolution 5 is what happens when 300 student musicians, dancers and singers from Roberto Clemente Middle School put a “Glee”-style spin on hits from the 1950s through ’90s. The event has sold out since its inception in 2006, according to organizers.

2nd annual Gaithersburg Book Festival begins
Honor the written word Saturday during the 2nd annual Gaithersburg Book Festival, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Gaithersburg City Hall Grounds. Here’s what was scheduled at the Ogden Nash Coffee House (Java Junction, 5 S. Summit Ave.):

  • 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Music by Alexandra Day
  • 11:30 to 12:20 p.m. — High school short story contest finalists, five readings
  • 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. — Poetry and music by Jaime Parades
  • 1:15 to 2 p.m. — High school short story contest finalists, four readings
  • 2 to 2:30 p.m. — High school short story contest finalists, winners announced
  • 2:30 to 3 p.m. —  music by Ace Elijah
  • 3 to 3:30 p.m. —  Poetry by Richard Peabody
  • 3:30 to 4 p.m. —  Poetry by Michele Wolf

Montgomery Traditions Reception
Artistically, Montgomery County is like a cultural gumbo. A reception for Montgomery County Traditions, sponsored by the Arts & Humanities Council, will celebrate the county’s broad blend of folk influences — from the down home blues to the story tellers of South Asia.
