Site-Specific ‘Remnants’ Exhibit Debuts at BlackRock

Steven Dobbin’s mixed-media show incorporates nearly 1,000 paint cans, a metaphor for his work as a special education teacher

Frederick County sculptor Steven Dobbin will create site-specific installations for an exhibit at BlackRock Center for the Arts.

The mixed-media show, “Remnants,” opens Oct. 10 and continues through Nov. 3 at Blackrock’s main gallery.

The public can watch Dobbin create the installation on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.

According to BlackRock, “Remnants” is a metaphor for Dobbin’s work as a special education teacher in Frederick County, MD. According to organizers, Dobbin began examining paint cans during a job-site painting projects and began to correlate the cans with the students he worked with, “students once cast aside, students whose possibilities could only be realized with time, energy, and effort.”

As a result, organizers said, Dobbin collected nearly 1,000 paint cans in less than a year, cans that evolved into a number of installations shown in New York, New Jersey, Washington and Maryland.
