Benita Scott Brings Caregiver Instincts to New Home Helpers & Direct Link Franchise

Bethesda, MD – When Benita Scott was laid off from her job of 15 years, she found herself at a crossroads. Did she continue to fight a tough job market for another corporate job, or did she follow her dream of being a caregiver?

Scott took the road less traveled and recently opened her own caregiver business – Home Helpers & Direct Link of Bethesda, Maryland.

“I am, by nature, a caregiver. It all goes back several years when I had to step into that role to help several family members through difficult health situations. Although the foundation was laid for me to do something in health care, I worked in the private sector until, as fate would have it, my department was shut down. I found myself in a tough market and I decided to go in a different direction. It was time to open my own Home Helpers,” she said.

Founded in 1997, Home Helpers is the nation’s leading franchise specializing in comprehensive home care for seniors, new mothers and individuals needing recuperative and continuing assistance. Direct Link is its proprietary line of 24/7 medical alert systems, including a fall sensor, automated medication dispenser and vital signs monitoring units. Home Helpers & Direct Link of Bethesda, Maryland, serves Bethesda, North Bethesda, Potomac, Wheaton, Rockville, Burtonsville, Silver Spring, Cabin John, Chevy Chase, Kemp Mill, Laurel, Kensington, North Kensington, Garrett Park, Glen Echo and Great Falls.

When her dad got cancer at 63, Scott had to care for him at a distance and was never sure he was getting the best of care. Scott herself stepped in as a major caregiver about five years ago when her daughter was put on long-term bed-rest during her high-risk pregnancy. Between that and her experience watching two grandparents lose the fight to Alzheimer’s, Scott is looking forward to being a better option for care in her community.

“I’m looking forward to having a positive impact on our community and making it possible for those who would otherwise be caregivers get back to work. If you’re taking care of a family member who needs intensive care, even when you love and enjoy working with that person, it takes a significant amount of time and effort. I know it can be scary to entrust your family member’s care to someone else, but I am, above all else, a daughter, a mother, a grandmother and a caregiver. Being trustworthy and compassionate is extremely important to me and I pride myself in that,” Scott said.

“It is my mission to ensure that those entrusted to the care of Home Helpers & Direct Link of Bethesda, Maryland, will not be forgotten, will be well taken care of and will always be cared for with love and respect,” she added.

Home Helpers & Direct Link offers free in-home consultations and works with each client to create a flexible, affordable care plan based on a person’s individual needs. Services offered include companionship, personal hygiene, meal preparation and transportation as well as medical services such as medication management, vital signs monitoring and care management.

“Our clients come first and foremost. We are here to serve you and we will do everything we can to provide excellent service each and every day. For me, upholding that level of integrity and excellence is very personal because I’ve had that long-distance story and I know what it’s like to care for loved ones whether you’re two miles away or 200 miles away. It can be challenging and you need someone you can trust. That’s where Home Helpers & Direct Link comes in,” Scott said.

In addition to launching her own business, Scott is a Certified Senior Advisor and has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and marketing. She’s a member of the chambers of commerce in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County, a member of “Professional Business Women,” a member of “Who’s Who” among business women, a member of GROWS (Grass Roots Organization for the Well-Being of Seniors) and a founding member of the “League of Extraordinary Business People.” Additionally, Scott volunteers as a mentor to high school kids, is a host mom for a student from Ghana and is looking forward to getting involved in the local Boys and Girls Club.
