Flash Flood Watch

In effect for Montgomery County, much of the Interstate 95 corridor until this evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Montgomery County from noon through the evening.

Counties that comprise the D.C.-metro region, Baltimore and Southern Maryland, and several Northern Virginia counties fall under the flood watch’s gaze.

A flash flood watch has also been issued for counties along and the Blue Ridge from noon to midnight.

A cold front has triggered the afternoon and evening storms, some of which could produce damaging wind gusts and large hail, according to the National Weather Service. 

Forecasters said showers and thunderstorms could bring one to two inches of rainfall along the Interstate 95 corridor through the evening. However the National Weather Service warns that a band of heavier rainfall is expected to dump more than two inches rain in a couple of hours.

The Mid-Atlantic region could may the impact of Hurricane Irene late Saturday into early Sunday, forecasters said. 

Irene’s core is expected to move over the northwestern Bahamas today and pass well off shore of the eastern and central costs of North Florida tonight and early Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm’s is projected to make landfall in coastal North Carolina.

Irene’s maximum sustained winds were recorded at 115 mph, according to National Hurricane Center data. 

The Category 3 hurricane is expected to strengthen.
