Germantown Fireworks Canceled

Due to storm's aftermath, Montgomery County canceled its fireworks shows at Boyds and Kensington on Wednesday.

Montgomery County has canceled its popular 4th of July fireworks displays and festivities, county officials announced Monday evening.

Germantown Glory fireworks at the Maryland SoccerPlex in the South Germantown Recreational Park and The Mid-County Sparkles! Fireworks display at Einstein High School in Kensington had been planned for Wednesday.

The events will not be rescheduled, County Recreation Department spokeswoman Judy Stiles said.

County officials cited continued disruption from Friday's severe storm.

"The site at mid-county is unquestionably unsafe," Stiles told Germantown Patch. "With all the trees down and people walking, it would be very unsafe."

Stiles said South Germantown Recreational Park was in better condition than Einstein High School, but said the county needed to devote its resources to cleanup and recovery efforts instead of pulling them away for a fireworks show upcounty.

In a press release issued Monday evening, County Executive Isiah Leggett said he regretted having to cancel the fireworks.

“I made this very difficult decision based on the ongoing need to apply county police, fire and rescue, transportation, and other county resources to help our residents who continue to be severely impacted by this recent storm,” Leggett said.

“While I sincerely regret having to take these steps, I believe that the health and welfare of our residents is paramount in this difficult time."

Leggett encouraged residents to have private celebrations and to continue to reach out to neighbors and friends feeling the impact of the storm's damage and loss of electricity.

As of press time Monday evening, Stiles was unable to provide information about the financial impact of the cancellation but said she'd likely have an update Tuesday morning.

About 12,000 to 15,000 people attended last year's fireworks display at the SoccerPlex, according to Stiles.
