Return of the ‘Mac’

Germantown middle school teacher pens second book of the Mac Coolidge series.

The Mac is back.

But this time Mac Coolidge, the eighth-grade superhero protagonist from Mighty Mac, is facing a new villain—a guy who calls himself Santa Claus in Mac is Back, the latest installment Marc Waldman’s teen fiction series.

Waldman is a dad and an eighth-grade teacher at Kingsview Middle School. He's trying to lure “reluctant readers” with this action series aimed at a teen/tween audience.

Mac is Back was released July 2. Jason Huddle, a spokesman for Comfort Publishing, said the Mac series is part of the publishing company's initiative to promote literacy and reading among younger readers.

As with Mighty Mac, Waldman weaves in universal themes—individuality, persevering in the face of adversity—into the plot of Mac is Back. Our 13-year-old hero must face the not-so-jolly Saint Nick while dealing with bullies and, of all things, a middle school crush.

Waldman grew up in Rockville and currently lives in Bethesda with his wife, Stacey Garner, and two children, Jake and Sarah.

He says a third installment, Mac and Cheese, is in the works.
