Sentencing Set for Teen Who Gave Gun to Rockville Metro Shooter

The teenager who provided the gun to the triggerman in the May 2012 Rockville Metro station shooting will be sentenced in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Friday.

Tavares Harris, 18, faces a maximum sentence of 25 years for first-degree assault, said Ramón V. Korionoff, Montgomery County State’s Attorney spokesman.

Harris was convicted in November for assault and for a felony handgun charge for giving Kevin Nguyen with the gun used in the shooting that injured two people.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the more serious charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder, according to court records accessed online.

In February, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Mary Beth McCormick postponed Harris’s sentencing to June 14 so he could complete his GED.

The June sentencing was moved to Friday due to a scheduling conflict with the judge, Korionoff said.

Last month, Kevin Q. Nguyen, 17, was sentenced to 25 years for the double-shooting at the Rockville Metro station on May 18, 2012.

Prosecutors said the shooting stemmed from an after-school fight at Richard Montgomery High School between Nguyen and the victim, Jared Cannon. After the fight, Cannon said he planned to rob Nguyen, according court records.

In retaliation, Harris told Nguyen to meet him on a path behind the school, where he gave Nguyen a loaded gun, according to court records.

Nguyen tracked down and shot Cannon in the pedestrian tunnel. Cannon, who was 16 at the time, and a female bystander, Wasima Gary, who was 19, were wounded, according to court records.
