What is Emancipation Day anyway?

Emancipation Day bought tax filers more time, but people don't seem to be procrastinating.  With taxes due are due in less than a week, the IRS has reported it has received more than half of the 141 million returns expected this year. The 89.7 million returns received  are comparable to the prior tax season, according to IRS records.

Emancipation Day commemorates the President Abraham Lincoln’s abolition of slavery in Washington, D.C., April 16, 1862. By law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do, which is why taxpayers got  three extra days to file.
