Food preservation classes offered by University of Maryland Extension

Food preservation has become a hot topic for Maryland citizens with increasing numbers of consumers interested in learning up-to-date techniques and safety procedures for preserving their garden’s bounty.

The University of Maryland Extension Office in Montgomery County is offering several hands-on food preservation classes to teach basic USDA approved canning techniques for high- and low-acid foods.  Classes are scheduled for April 4 and 6 from 9 a.m. to noon.  The April 4 class will focus on water bath canning techniques for high-acid food such as tomatoes.  The April 6 class will cover pressure canning techniques.   The April 4 class will be repeated on May 14 from 9 a.m.-noon.

The cost for a single class is $35 and includes a copy of a So Easy to Preserve. Participants may take both the water bath and pressure canning classes for $65.
