For-Profit to Provide Textile Recycling for Montgomery County

Community Recycling will work with the Shady Grove Transfer Station to collect clothing for reuse.

More than 100 tons of textiles—that's clothes, bags, footwear and some accessories—were recycled in Montgomery County last year. A company recently hired to process textile recycling and reuse the goods wants to significantly increase the number.

Community Recycling, a Pennsylvania-based company specializing in textile recycling, won a bid to coordinate this type of recycling for Montgomery County through June.

To participate, residents will need to drop off clothes, shoes, bags, belts, wallets and other textiles that are clean and in good condition to the Shady Grove Transfer Station. Community Recycling will then work to find ways to reuse the material.

"Montgomery County has no intention of competing with the many charities that serve our community and advise residents to donate items to their favorite non-profit organizations; however, please think of Montgomery County for other items," said Transfer Station Manager Peter Karasik in a statement.
