Top 5 Valentine's Day Alternatives in the DC-Metro Region

A pet wedding, campfire, underwear run and more in our Valentine's guide.

Dinner at a dimly-lit local restaurant. A bouquet of red roses and a heart-shaped box of chocolates.  An intimate home cooked meal for two by candlelight.

While the "old stand-bys" can offer a nice time on Valentine's Day, what if you are single, are trying to diet and don't want the chocolate or just feel like you're stuck in a rut?

Shake things up this year and try one of these alternatives to the traditional Valentine's Day activities:

Brookside Gardens in Wheaton will host a Singles' Campfire on Friday, February 8 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Singles age 35-50 can enjoy hot cider and engage in ice-breakers, warm-up and some nature-themed games around a blazing campfire.

The AFI in Silver Spring is featuring a series of great movie romances during their annual "Screen Valentines" event. Offering selections from the previous eight decades, everyone will find something to love about these romantic films. Check out Greta Garbo in the 1939 film Ninotchka,  Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand in 1973's The Way We Were, Nicholas Cage in 1983's Valley Girl, 2006's Once which was transformed into a 2012 Tony Award winning play. Baltimore's Humane Society will host two "same-species" weddings on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. Witness the nuptials between Tippy and Fuschia (two adoptable shelter dogs) and King Julian and Elena (two adoptable shelter cats). You can purchase items from the registry to help the Humane Society or even apply to take one of the happy couples home! Check out this video from last year's event.

Show off your assets as you run a 1.75 mile lap around the U.S. Capitol Building in your Valentine's-themed undies as you raise money for the Children's Tumor Foundation during Cupid's Undie Run. The event goes from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. and kicks off at the Pourhouse, 319 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

Naked at the National Gallery Scavenger Hunt allows you to keep your clothes on, but will test your keen eye as you scour the National Gallery's collection for naughty nymphs, codpieces, bathing beauties, the original Adonis and more in this two-hour scavenger hunt on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are available on-line.
