Dimensions of Wellness Series Kicks Off this Wednesday

This Wednesday, the Ingleside at King Farm retirement community will kick off a conversation about health and wellbeing and the many dimensions that create wellness.  Diana Cirone, the Director of Life Enrichment for the community, explains.

At the start of the New Year, we are often bombarded by ads that remind us to be mindful of our health.  With advertisements about “hitting the gym” or “losing that holiday weight”, the words “health” and “wellness” seem to be buzz words of the season. Clearly the focus of these advertisements is on our physical health but what about other components of personal wellness?

In your younger years, “wellness” perhaps meant that you ate your fruits and vegetables, looked good in a bathing suit or perhaps it simply meant that you stayed healthy when your children had the flu. Your perception of wellness certainly changes throughout life.

Dr. Bill Hettler, the Co-founder of the National Wellness Institute (NWI), created the Six Dimensions of Wellness in 1976.  According to his model, achieving wellness is about finding balance in six key areas including Emotional, Occupational, Intellectual, Physical, Social and Spiritual. Since then, others have expanded this model to include Environmental and Financial wellness.  While it’s not an industry standard, the continuing care retirement community based in Rockville, Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) extends this wellness model even further.  IKF includes creative wellness. Research suggests that participating in creative programs is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

So, at this time, we have nine (yes NINE!) dimensions of wellness that our members aim to achieve for personal wellness. While nine dimensions may be daunting, Ingleside at King Farm Life Enrichment programs are designed to integrate these dimensions of wellness in every program.  This interdependent model provides opportunities for residents to maintain their personal health and embrace wellness in all that we do.

A fitness class at Ingleside at King Farm becomes an opportunity to maintain physical health while engaging socially.  Our lecture series, allows residents to delve into their occupational, intellectual and social wellness. With monthly calendars full of these opportunities, the community helps its members to meet all NINE dimensions of wellness.

So, we invite you to join IKF members as we kick off our series, Conversations on a Balanced Life this Wed. Feb. 5, 1:00pm. We will explore, together, these nine dimensions of wellness that will help you defy aging by living a balanced life. The event will be held on our campus at 701 King Farm Blvd., Rockville. Coffee and dessert will be served. RSVP to Chelsea, 240-499-9019, or visit inglesidekingfarm.org.

This is your year to look at your own life and find ways to reach each of these areas of wellness in your day to day activities.  You may be surprised to know that you are already living a life full of wellness by just doing the things you love to do!
