Happy Birthday, Future Soccer Star! (Goodbye, Summer!)

August 1st is turnover time in youth soccer...let's get this party started!

The First of August - the birthdate of champions.

If you are planning to have children, August 1 is second only to December 31 as the ideal date of birth.

It is on this day that your son or daughter tops the Gladwellian charts, my friends, for today is the day that the "U-" soccer years matters!

For reasons known to none, youth soccer ages begin on August 1. If your child is born today or in the next few days, they will be highly sought after in a decade. Bigger, Stronger, more mature than their school year counter parts, they will dominate their club sports, receive praise earlier, and be singled out for extra training. It will be a heady few years. (But don't forget to start that college savings fund. I'm pretty sure the fact that less than 3% of all high school athletes receive any scholarship money at all won't change).

And for us soccer managers, today marks the death knell of Summer. It is on this day that MSYSA's clock slowly flips, like the bedside clock in Groundhog Day, so that your child's team is one year older and the Registration process can begin.

So dust off those laminators and start carving up that Spring 2013 team photo. Check that fees have been paid and track down the stragglers. Don't forget the USYS card stock and look up your team manager password. Tournaments in three to four weeks. Are the uniforms ordered? Everyone back from summer camp? Anyone grow?

And as you scan the roster, take a glance at the date of birth column...see all those August and September birthdays?! Well done, sir. Well done. Sit back and enjoy as success is assured!

Its GO time, people. Let's do this!
