Support for Independent, Local Businesses

I've been struck recently by how many big-box stores and restaurant chains surround the residents of Germantown. I'm wondering how we can attract more locally-owned and independent restaurant and business owners to Germantown and create a more unique community? Anyone have thoughts on this?
