Alleged Cab Robbers Arrested

Montgomery County Police accuse the men of using a Taser-like device to rob cab drivers

Three men were charged with assault and robbery for using a Taser-like device to rob cab drivers in Clarksburg and Rockville, Montgomery County Police said Tuesday.

The suspects — Jamel Lamar McInnis, 18, of the 13100 block of Commodore Lane in Clarksburg; Brandon Eugene Addison, 21, of the 7500 block of Filbert Terrace in Gaithersburg; and Kevin Olaniyi, 20, of no fixed address — were charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of first-degree assault, Montgomery County Police said.

According to police, 5th District officers responded to Sutler Square Terrace and Brewers Tavern Road in Clarksburg for a report of a robbery at 1:15 a.m., Jan. 10.

An investigation revealed that Regency Cab had dispatched a cab to an address on Brewer’s Tavern Way. The driver reportedly stopped for a man who hailed the cab from the side of the road. Police allege the man stunned the driver with a Taser-like device and took his cash before leaving the scene. The cab driver suffered minor injuries, police said.

Another incident was reported in Rockville at around 11 p.m., Jan. 15. Officers from Montgomery County Police department’s 1st district and Rockville City Police officers responded to the 300 block of Lawrence Drive for a report of a “suspicious situation in progress.”

A Regency Cab driver reportedly picked up two men at Rockville Metro and drove them to a residence on Lawrence Drive. But when they arrived, according to Montgomery County Police, one of the men stunned the cab driver with a Taser-like device. The men made off with the cab driver’s fares and left the scene. Police said the cab driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

McInnis was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 24; Addison was arrested Thursday, Jan. 26; Olaniyi was arrested Monday, Jan. 30. 

McInnis is being held on a $10,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17 in Montgomery County District Court. Addison and Olaniyi are being held on a $150,000 bond and have preliminary hearings scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24.
