Pedestrian Crash Involved Germantown Driver

Police said a car struck an elderly couple on the sidewalk.

The circumstances surrounding a serious pedestrian collision that involved a Germantown driver New Year’s Day remain under investigation, Montgomery County Police said.

Police responded to the incident at 10 a.m. Sunday in Kensington, near Summit Avenue and Prospect Street.

According to police, a 2003 Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on Summit, but for reasons still under investigation the car left the roadway and struck two pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Police said the pedestrians — John Richard Whalen, 77, of the 9900 block of Cable Drive in Kensington, and his wife, Dorothy Whalen, 74 — were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver, Mary Ann Harrington, 68, of the 21000 block of Father Hurley Boulevard in Germantown, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
