Lopez Convicted in Deaths of Germantown Mom, Son

Curtis Lopez was found guilty Friday of murdering his wife, Jane McQuain, and her 11-year-old son, William, in 2011, according to published accounts.

Lopez will be sentenced in April and faces life in prison. John J. McCarthy, State’s Attorney for Montgomery County reportedly told The Gazette:

“Mr. Lopez faces life in prison because of the heinous crimes he has committed. To kill an innocent 11-year-old child is beyond forgivable. This guy should spend the rest of his waking moments behind bars. The only just sentence for this double murderer is life without the possibility of parole.”

Lopez, 46, did not admit guilt but entered an Alford plea, which acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction, The Washington Post reports.

“Such a plea is tantamount to a conviction,” according to The Washington Post.

Lopez’s trial had been scheduled to start Monday, court records show. He is expected to give his account of what happened during the April sentencing, according to The Washington Post.

McQuain, 51, was found beaten and stabbed to death in her Germantown apartment on Oct. 12, 2011, Patch has reported.

Police began their investigation in early October after she failed to arrive at work, Patch has reported.

Police officers and rescue personnel entered McQuain's Germantown apartment through a second-story window and found her dead in her bed. An autopsy revealed she suffered blunt force trauma to her head and was stabbed twice in the back.

Her 2011 Honda CRV was missing along with a flat-screen TV and a lamp. Investigators began a nationwide search for her son, William. The next day, Lopez was arrested the next day in Charlotte, N.C., with McQuain's Honda, police said.

Meanwhile, the community held out hope that her son was still alive, hosting search parties and vigils with hopes that he would come home.

Lopez was not William’s biological father.

On Oct. 18, a police dog found the boy's body in a wooded area in Clarksburg. His skull had been crushed and a baseball bat was found nearby, Patch has reported. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station showed Lopez and the boy together on Oct. 1.
