Police: Latest sighting was near Germantown on Thursday

Bear sightings continued in Northern Montgomery County, with reports of a bear roaming in Gaithersburg on Thursday morning. 

Montgomery County police said the bear sighting was reported at around 8 a.m. near Twelve Oaks Drive and Clopper Road.

Police said there were sightings in Germantown, at Middlebrook and Frederick roads, on Tuesday, and another Gaithersburg sighting on Wednesday, near Quince Orchard and Darnestown roads.

Gaithersburg police started receiving calls for sightings as far back as Saturday.

The Department of Natural Resources said bear sightings in the suburbs are common this time of year and are typically not aggressive.

Police are warning people to give the bears space if the bears are not being aggressive.

Tracking the Bear

  • 8:12 a.m. Tuesday, June 18 —The Emergency Communications Center received calls for a black bear in the area of Middlebrook Road and Frederick Road in Germantown. 
  • 7:15 a.m., Wednesday, June 19—the Communications Center received calls for a black bear in the area of Quince Orchard Road and Darnestown Road in Gaithersburg. 
  • 7:54 a.m. Thursday, June 20—The Communications Center received calls for a bear in the area of Twelve Oaks Drive and Clopper Road in Gaithersburg.
