Trash Truck Fire at Shady Grove Transfer Station

No injuries and no monetary loss in blaze

Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of a trash fire that ignited in the bed of a tractor trailer just before 2:30pm yesterday at the Shady Grove Transfer Facility.

Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the County Fire and Rescue Service, said the truck was full of trash, and do not suspect any foul play.

"It could have been anything," Garcia said. "Maybe a cigarette butt smoldering."

The truck was outside the facility at 16101 Frederick Road, and no one was inured by the blaze, he said.

When fire and rescue personnel arrived, County crews had already begun to throw water on the blaze.

Firefighters then took about 40 minutes to spread out and douse the smoldering garbage on the parking lot.
