Cardin Ranks No. 43 in Senate Wealth

Mikulski comes in at 92, while Bartlett wealthiest among Maryland House members.

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) is the 43rd wealthiest senator and U.S. Barbara Mikulski ranks 92nd, according to calculations from the Center for Responsive Politics, published in The Washington Post on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, ABC News cited a New York Times study that showed the average American's net worth declined 8 percent, while the net worth of the average member of Congress increased 15 percent.

The center's calculations are broad estimates based on Congress members' own disclosures of their assets and liabilities, not including their home. The disclosure forms do not require exact numbers—just estimated ranges. The calculations then are based on the midpoint of each range, subtracting liabilities from assets.

Cardin's net worth was estimated between $1.9 million and $5 million, according to the center's website. Mikulski's net worth was estimated at $156,000 and $517,000.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-6th) is the state's wealthiest member in Congress. His net worth was estimated between $2.4 million and $8.2 million, putting him 58th among the 435 members of the House of Representatives. His district ranged from Garrett County to the Susquehanna River. But because of redistricting, the 6th District now includes Germantown, Gaithersburg and parts of Rockville.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-8th) was 308th among his peers, with a net worth between $156,000 and $517,000. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-4th) was 396th, with a net worth between $16,423 and $45,420.

Across the Potomac, Sen. Mark Warner’s net worth for 2010 was estimated to be upwards of $192 million, second only to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, whose net worth in 2010 was north of $231 million.

In November, the Center for Responsive Politics reported that 250 members of Congress are millionaires and the divide between the wealth of politicians and the people they represent is growing.

Very interesting information on our congressional member's worth. I still believe money buys votes.

It's a rare occurrence if it doesn't.

What's up with Donna Edwards? 16-45k? Does she live out of hotels and just rent cars?
