Flash Mob Pepco? The Song's All Ready...

Yet another petition against Pepco is underway, but this one stands out from the rest with a catchy song that's ripe for a flash mob.

Amidst the plethora of petitions against Pepco, one petition—"Pack up Pepco"—stands out with its catchy song that's just waiting for use by a flash mob.

Written and performed on YouTube by Town of Somerset Council Member Cathy Pickar, the song has a refrain that captures the community's mood well:

Six long days and 100 degrees, the sweat drips thick with corporate greed.

The live wires dancin' and the hot sparks fly while the people try to celebrate the Fourth of July!

Pickar organized the "Pack Up Pepco" petition with the help of neighbors, Rockville resident Abbe Milstein, Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin and other Somerset Council members, Pickar said. Her daughter Crystal Pickar helped her with the website

The petition calls for:

  • "Governor O'Malley to demand resignation of ALL current Maryland Public Service Commissioners (PSC) and make new appointments to include a disaster response expert and a prominent consumer advocate."
  • "The PSC [to] levy significant fines against PEPCO that directly benefit customers using Senator [Brian] Frosh's and Senator [James Rosapepe's] 'Surge Reserve' model."
  • Pepco stockholders "to make changes in PEPCO corporate leadership."

The surge reserve—proposed by Frosh and Rosapepe in a letter to the Maryland Public Service Commission—would be made up of about 10,000 to 15,000 "trained technicians, similar to volunteer fire departments and the National Guard," the letter said.

"Retired utility workers, retired military, independent electricians and other building trades, as well as simply able citizens, would all be candidates to join the 'surge reserve,' get trained, and commit to being called up as needed. Together with backup equipment, a 'surge reserve' would cut [the] cost of power failures dramatically by restoring service promptly," the letter continued.
