Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will head a group of county leaders as the newly elected president of the County Executives of America, the organization announced in a statement Wednesday.

“I’m very proud to take the helm of this great organization that has helped not only Montgomery County but counties across the country,” Leggett said in a statement. “These are trying times for local governments! We have had to fight our way through this recession with shrinking revenue and little help from the federal government. My colleagues and I hope to reverse that trend.”

More than 700 leaders at the county, parish and borough level are part of the organization, according to its website. Leggett said he hopes to work with President Barack Obama and Congress on behalf of the organization. Leggett will serve a one-year term.

“I’m grateful for the leadership and time that Ike has given to the organization and I’m positive his efforts will pay handsome dividends,” said Mike Griffin, executive director of County Executives of America. “The great leadership he has shown in Montgomery County will only enhance CEA’s ability to succeed.”
