Local Caucus Supports Feldman to Replace Garagiola

District 15 Democratic Caucus gave Del. Brian J. Feldman 'unanimous and unconditional' recommendation.

Maryland Del. Brian J. Feldman was endorsed by the District 15 Democratic Caucus to replace Sen. Robert J. Garagiola, who announced his resignation last week.

The chairman and vice chairman of the District 15 Democratic Caucus sent a letter to the chairman of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee on Monday, news outlets have reported, giving its “unanimous and unconditional” recommendation of Feldman, who is from Potomac.

The full letter is posted at Maryland Juice, the political blog that broke the story.

“Brian’s background and extensive experience, both in the General Assembly and as an experienced attorney, are valuable assets for our County and District 15 in the State Senate,” the letter states. Please see the full account at MarylandJuice.com.

In an interview with The Gazette on Tuesday, Garagiola said he was supportive of Feldman’s endorsement and described him as an “astute politician.”

Garagiola, who is the senate majority leader, said in a statement June 6 that he was leaving elected office in order to spend more time with his kids.

His resignation would take effect Sept. 1. The news came as a surprise to many local leaders.

Last year, Garagiola lost the Democratic primary for the 6th District congressional seat to newcomer John Delaney, a businessman from Potomac, despite being strongly favored.

The fate of the District 15 seat is now up to the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee, which will nominate a replacement, subject to approval by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D).

The central committee has 30 days from the time Garagiola vacates his seat to submit a name to the governor.

Disrict 15 comprises most of northwest Montgomery County.
