Two Montgomery County Public Schools students were recently named as finalists in an art contest held during the 2011-12 school year, contest organizers announced last week.

Anika Seth and Timothy Chu — third graders at William B. Gibbs Elementary School last school year — were named finalists in the 2012 Wrecks of the World International Art Contest, sponsored by the JASON Project, the North American marine Environmental Protection Association and the U.S. Coast Guard.

To commemorate the centenary of Titanic’s maiden voyage and sinking, students were asked to create a poster focused on any historic or modern shipwreck or how to make shipping safer.

Organizers said finalists would receive a calendar with the artwork and a signed photograph and certificate from oceanographer and Titanic discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard.
