Maryland Loses No. 1 Education Ranking - Sort Of

The national education newspaper that ranks the states for the quality of their schools has changed its label for Maryland schools.

For the past five years, Maryland has been ranked as the No. 1 state for education, but the newspaper that compiles the rankings says that is no longer so, reports theBaltimore Sun.

Education Week, a national education newspaper, says that this year instead of ranking states from best to worst, it’s only passing out letter grades, reports WJZ TV. In all of the categories used to rank districts, like student achievement, Maryland received a “B” — no other state earned higher.

In the past, Maryland had some stiff competition from Massachusetts. The states are neck-and-neck this year, says the TV station.

State schools Superintendent Lillian Lowery told the Sun that Maryland is still at the top of the highest-performing states in the country. "Other states may be up there with us," he said.
