News Nearby: Watkins Mill Student Struck By Vehicle While Walking To School Tuesday

A Watkins Mill High School student who was struck by a vehicle while walking to school Tuesday is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday evening, Watkins Mill principal Scott Murphy wrote in a letter to the school community.

At approximately 7:15 a.m., the student "was struck by a car as he was walking across Apple Ridge Road on the crosswalk adjacent to our school," Murphy wrote in the letter. "Medical personnel, police, school officials and the student's parent immediately responded to the scene. The student was alert and stable when paramedics arrived, and he was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation."

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene to speak with police, Murphy said.

In his letter to Watkins Mill community members, Murphy urged pedestrians and drivers alike to take caution when approaching school areas.

It's the second time this school year a student has been hit by a car while walking to school. .

Montgomery County Public Schools spokesperson Dana Tofig echoed Murphy's sentiments.

"We need drivers in Montgomery County to keep an eye out for our students and to stay alert to any safety concerns," Tofig told Patch in an email. "At the same time, we need to make sure our students are following all traffic laws and safety procedures."
