Free UMD Women's Soccer Game at SoccerPlex Tonight

No. 3 University of Maryland plays American University 7 p.m. tonight. Free admission to the game.

A rain-soaked soccer field scrapped the University of Maryland women’s team’s plans to play American University on Tuesday.

But tonight, local soccer fans have no reason to blame the rain.

The match has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. today at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, said Patrick Fischer, a spokesman for Maryland athletics.

And because the game has been rescheduled, admission to the game will be free, Fischer said.

The Maryland’s women’s soccer team is currently ranked no. 3.

Days worth of persistent rain showers have been working their way through the region, leaving a trail of cancellations behind it. Fischer said this soccer match could not be rescheduled at Ludwig field.

Head soccer coach Brian Pensky was the one who called in the favor.

“This all started percolating at 1 o’clock,” said Trish Heffelfinger, late Wednesday afternoon. Heffelfinger is the executive director of the Maryland SoccerPlex Foundation, which owns and operates the SoccerPlex.

An eight-inch layer of sand beneath the grass enables the field to withstand eight inches of rain an hour, no sweat.

“We never have to cancel,” Heffelfinger said.

It was the first time Maryland’s women’s soccer team has ever played a match at the SoccerPlex, Heffelfinger said, though the venue recently hosted an ACC men’s soccer tournament and hosts Georgetown University women’s soccer team practices during the off-season.

Heffelfinger said the venue would host the ACC men’s soccer tournament in 2012.
