Northwest Hires New Varsity Boys Basketball Coach

Usman Jamil will take the lead next year, following Jesse Irvin's resignation.

Northwest High School has a new boys’ varsity basketball coach.

Well, kind of.

The Jaguars have  tapped boys’ junior varsity basketball coach Usman Jamil to lead the varsity team next season, school administrators announced online.

"Being a head coach is a dream come true for me,” said Jamil in a statement on the school’s website. “I look forward to working with all of these young men. I am excited and really happy to be the coach."

Jamil coached the school’s junior varsity team for three years. He attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and played basketball in Canada at Langara College while pursuing a master's degree. He is a 1997 graduate of Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Rockville, where he played basketball under Montgomery County Hall-of-Fame coach Dan Harwood.

The announcementn of Jamil’s promotion came weeks after coach Jesse Irvin resigned. Irvin compiled a 36-36 record in his three seasons as coach. Jamil will inherit a team that finished the season with a 10-12 record, including 7-5 in the 4A West Division for a third-place finish.
