Roster Building Continues for Germantown’s New Pro Soccer Team

National Women’s Soccer League’s Washington Spirit announced draft picks Friday.

The Germantown-based Washington Spirit continues to build its dream team with the recent addition of four NCAA women’s soccer stars from the National Women’s Soccer League’s inaugural draft.

Florida State striker Tiffany McCarty, of Laurel, was the team’s first-round pick and the draft's second overall selection, according to team manager Chris Hummer.

Other draftees include Virginia striker Caroline Miller, who has ties to Rockville; Florida midfielder Holly King, and forward Colleen Williams, of Titusville, N.J.

The Spirit expects to sign free agents as it prepares for the start of NWSL's inaugural season in April, according to Hummer.

The team has already announced the addition of U.S. Women's National Team stars Ashlyn Harris, Ali Krieger and Lori Lindsey, Canadian internationals Robyn Gayle and Diana Matheson, and Mexican internationals Alin Garciamendez and Guadalupe Worbis earlier this month.

Managed by the U.S. Soccer Federation, The Washington Spirit trains and competes at the Maryland SoccerPlex—the former home of women’s pro team the Washington Freedom.
