Before the game began, Allen Hewitt, a Washington, DC, resident, was waiting for his buddy to arrive. The two always go to the home opener together. "I haven't missed an opener since they've been back," said Hewitt, who also "vaguely remembers" attending a game at Griffin stadium. Hewitt said this year he is looking for "consistency" from his Washington Nationals after last year's injuries. Billy Jones brought his daughter, Courtney, and son, Tyler, to DC from Carroll County…
Sports on Earth catches up with the former Washington Nationals manager with Rockville roots.
Is there any room for reprieve when it comes to baseball and quitters? That’s the question a recent post at Sports on Earth raised after catching up with Jim Riggleman, who quit as manager of the Washington Nationals in 2011 when the team declined to give him a contract extension. At the moment, Riggleman manages the Louisville Bats (an affiliate of the Cinncinati Reds). He told Sports on Earth that he regrets quitting the Nats and said starting at a “low level” of the minors might be a way of getting back to the majors. "As I've told many people, it wasn't the smart thing to do," Riggleman said. "But it was thought out and it had been going for awhile, but it wasn't the smart decision. But I thought it was the right decision. That's the…
Two members of the Washington Spirit will be living at a Rockville retirement community for the duration of their season.
Chris Hummer, the general manager of the Washington Spirit, was searching high and low for affordable housing for members of his professional women's soccer team when he was put into contact with an unlikely location: Ingleside at King Farm retirement community. The community volunteered to host members of his team, and that is how Robyn Gayle and Diana Matheson found themselves as the new residents of the Rockville-based retirement community. "When I first told [Matheson], she thought I was joking," said Gayle, who was teammates with Matheson on Canada's bronze medal-winning 2012 Olympic soccer team. "But we took a look at the place and said 'This looks pretty cool.'" The two players, both in their 20s, will be sharing a two-bedroom suite…

Plans are in the works for a new $50 million, 6,500 seat arena near Shady Grove Metro, The Gazette reports.
A local develper has sketched out plans for a $50 million, multipurpose arena slated to be built on an 8-acre property next to Shady Grove Metro Station, The Gazette reports. Potomac native William Askinazi, principal for the development company D&A Sports and Entertainment, said he envisions a space "where indoor lacrosse championships could take place simultaneously with antique roadshows," according to the report.
