Crime Summary: Pawn Shop Robbed, Car Break-ins Reported

The following arrest information was supplied by the Montgomery County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

An attempted armed robbery was reported in the parking lot of Walmart, 20910 Frederick Road, a Montgomery County Police spokesperson said. At around midnight on May 5, two men — at least one wearing a ski mask and wielding a gun — demanded property from the alleged victim but fled when the person didn’t have any property to take, police said. The man in the ski mask was described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall and between 160 and 165 pounds. No description was offered for the other man. An armed robbery was reported at 4:10 p.m. May 5 at Germantown Famous Pawn, 19600 Gunners Brach Drive. Police said a gun-wielding man threatened the alleged victim before obtaining property. County Police Look To Redraw Coverage Areas

Montgomery County police look to redraw coverage lines to better balance the workload between the districts.

The Montgomery County Police Department is studying station workloads and working with command staff to see what district boundaries would work best, police officials said Tuesday. “Everything is still in discussion; we're discussing it with the command staff and crime analysis and our communications folks,” county police Lt. Darren Francke said. “But it could all change next week."  Police had considered putting new district lines in place by May 1, but projects, including opening new the Public Safety Headquarters in Gaithersburg and relocating the 1st District station, put plans on hold, Francke said. “Anytime you do a redistricting, part of the goal is to help balance the workload among the districts,” he said. “But because of …

Crime Summary: Sex Assault, Strong-Arm Robberies Reported

A sex assault was reported in the 13200 block of Bristlecone Way in Germantown on Sunday, March 18, between 3 and 4:05 a.m. Police said the suspect was known to the alleged victim. A strong-arm robbery was reported in the 12600 block of Grey Eagle Court in Germantown on Wednesday, March 14, between 5 and 5:16 p.m.  The suspects are described as two, 19- to 21-year-old males, between 5’8”to 5’9”. Three males are suspected in a strong-arm robbery reported at 20009 Century Boulevard in Germantown at 1:25 a.m. Friday, March 16. Police Work to Combat Crime Rate in Germantown

5th District police are working to develop alternative patrol tactics to combat the rise in crime in Germantown.

In response to an increase in the crime trend in Germantown, police are considering alternative patrol strategies. Options up for consideration include an uncontrolled unit that would have more investigation capabilities. According to officer Steven Smugeresky, the unit would have more flexibility than regular patrol to conduct surveillance and work from community intelligence.  Additionally, police are considering strengthening bike patrol.  Smugeresky trains officer on bike patrol. He said the service gives officers and up-close and personal look at the community.
