Number of Maryland Children in Foster Care Drops 35 Percent

Initiative helps place more children in permanent homes.

Over the past five years, the number of Maryland children in foster care has dropped 35 percent, from 10,330 in 2007  to 6,709 in 2012, according to a story in the Baltimore Sun. The program fosters better collaboration between the court system, better data analysis and works with birth families earlier in the process to more efficiently dissolve the rights of the biological parents. Dallas describes the program as "a dramatic sea change in the way we do things." Children in the foster care program leave via one of four methods—adoption, returning…

Name: Sweden, 7-year-old, female domestic short-hair, brown tabby and white ID: A351388  I might seem like a shy loner at first, but you’ll find my disposition sweet, even though I’m very independent. I prefer a quiet, calm environment – indoors is perfect.  I’m good with other cats, and I’m good about using my litter box.  Like a cat with a little maturity?  That would be me. Purr! If you’re interested in adopting Sweden, contact the Montgomery County Humane Society, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville. Visit with the animals from noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and Thursday and Friday; or noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Humane Society is closed on Wednesday. Featured animals are examples of the variety available at the Montgomery County Humane Society shelter and may not be available as of publication date.

Name: Jack Sparrow, 5-year-old, neutered male Tan Beagle/Kemmer Cur mix Tag: 141 ID: 350935 What a good boy am I! I’m very friendly and I love to run and play. Never heard of a Kemmer Cur?  Many generations back, my historic breeder, a Mr. Kemmer, started with an Original Mountain Cur to develop a line of dogs that would be great at hunting, treeing and tracking – and breaking off unwanted game. We make excellent companions and can be great stock or watch dogs.  Me?  I’m crate-trained and love being brushed.  If I had my druthers, I’d prefer my new owner be a lady.  Come meet me here at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and offer me a great new home — yours! If you’re interested in adopting Jack, contact the Montgomery County Humane …
