Art Scene: ‘A Rainbow of Personalities and Thoughts’

Portraits in latest BlackRock exhibit reflect artist’s experiences ‘as a female, sister and a cancer survivor’

A BlackRock new exhibit, “A Rainbow of Personalities and Thoughts," will feature acrylic paintings by Jessica Hopkins.  "Rainbow" will be on view in BlackRock's terrace gallery through Jan. 31. In describing her art, Hopkins said the paintings reflected what she’s lived: “With regard to my artwork, they reflect life situations based on my personal experiences, as a female, sister and a cancer survivor. Color serves as a veil that covers and shields the subjects in my compositions from social issues and their insecurities. Normal gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondauy through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Patrons are urged to check BlackRock’s website, as hours are subject to change.

Exhibit Features Photos by Germantown Vegetable Farmer

‘Fragility’ includes photographs by Woody Woodroof, founder of Red Wiggler Community

Photographs taken by an organic vegetable farmer in Germantown will be part of an exhibit in Silver Spring and will include banner-size prints of plant silhouettes on hemp—all created without the aid of a dark room. The exhibit, “Fragility,” will be on view at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room in the Silver Spring Civic Center from Dec. 3 through Jan. 28. An opening reception set for Dec. 13, the Montgomery County arts council announced Monday. Woody Woodroof, an established artist and founder of Red Wiggler Community Farm, will display his cyanotype photograms of plants on and around the farm. Printed on hemp, the delicate images appear on both sides of the fabric, creating ghost-like forms. Woodroof has been using alternative …

Fun on a Rainy Day: Kids' Crafts from Household Waste

What I thought of as trash, my kids saw as art supplies.

“Stickers!” my daughter cried, crawling into the middle of the table. My children were restless.  It was late afternoon, another soggy day after a week of endless rain.  I had already reprimanded the youngest two for infractions ranging from climbing out of the car seat (my daughter) to screeching at ear-piercing decibels (my son).  It was time to try something different.  So, I transformed our kitchen table into a junk pile: old magazines, toilet paper rolls, various dry pastas, random craft supplies from previous school projects. “Make art,” I told them.  “Anything you want.”  After handing my children glue, tape, and scissors, I took a step back.  Much to my amazement, the kids dove in with excitement and started to fight over the empty…

Editor's Notebook

A New Park for Germantown, a Fire, African Art and So Much More

See a summary new for the week of Oct. 11-15.

We started the week looking back at the festivities at the Butler's Orchard Pumpkin Festival. If seeing the video makes you wish you were there, don't fret, the festival is going on every weekend in October.  We also reported on the story of Northwest Alum Ike Whitaker's return to the field as assistant coach. We walked the red carpet Monday night to see the homecoming attire of the ladies and gentlemen of Seneca Valley High School. Check out our photos from the event! Later, we heard the fascinating story of local activist Betty Valdes, who will be inducted into the Human Rights Hall of Fame on Oct, 24. In other news, the county council designated the Montgomery Business Development Corporation (BDC)  as the county's business development …
