Big changes proposed for 42-year-old local landmark.
The Kennedy Center has announced plans for a $100 million expansion to its now 42-year-old complex that stands as a landmark along the Potomac River in Washington, DC, according a Washington Post story. The current facility hosts 2,000 events annually, drawing crowds from the city, its suburbs and far beyond, and it is "pressed for space," according to the article. The new architectural plan seeks to connect the current complex with the waterfront with public green spaces, a video projection wall, classrooms, rehearsal facilities, multipurpose rooms for educational programs and most notably, a floating stage on the Potomac. Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.
Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." On Thursday, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards, which will air on Sept. 23. Leading the pack were Mad Men and American Horror Story, with 17 nominees each. The Washington Post reported that if Mad Men wins TV’s best drama for the fifth consecutive year, it would be a record for most wins in the drama category. Among others recognized were popular comedies Modern Family, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and newcomers Veep and Girls. Dramas competing for the win against Mad Men include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, as well as Breaking Bad, Homeland and Downton Abbey. Grammy-nominated wind quintet performs at BlackRock Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 20.
An original piece in Imani Winds’ repertoire, “Umoja” is a sonic metaphor for what the wind quintet represents. First, fluttered notes from a flute introduce “Umoja,” a Kiswahili word for unity. Gradually, sounds from other instruments — the oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon — melt into the melody, forming unity in sound. Imani Winds performs at BlackRock Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 20. They hope to convey to the audience that there’s room for umoja in classical music. “We have our own language for playing music,” said flutist Valerie Coleman, who formed Imani Winds in a college dorm room in the late 1990s.
