County’s Newest Park Opens in Darnestown Saturday

Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Darnestown Heritage Park set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10

County officials plan to celebrate the minting of a new park in Darnestown on Saturday. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony for Darnestown Heritage Park is set for 9:30 a.m. at 14015 Darnestown Road. Darnestown Civic Association leaders, Montgomery County Isiah Leggett and Montgomery County councilman Craig Rice, D-Dist. 2, of Germantown, were expected to offer remarks. Darnestown Heritage Park was built on nearly a half acre of undeveloped land near Darnestown and Seneca roads, an effort spurred from the community’s desire to give the rural, unincorporated place a clear focal point that highlights Darnestown’s history. Delaney Unseats Bartlett In Maryland's 6th District

Democratic challenger John Delaney defeats incumbent U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett for Maryland's 6th Congressional District.

(Update, 10:45 p.m.) Maryland 5th District Rep. and Democratic WHIP Steny Hoyer introduced the state's new 6th District Rep. John Delaney at approximately 10:20 p.m. Delaney thanked Maryland's 6th District constituents and said his campaign was about standing together and working for the common good of the country. "I promise to work as hard as I can to make differences in your lives, pursue opportunities, and help overcome challenges," Delaney said in his acceptance speech to supporters at the Bolger Conference Center in Potomac. Cyclist Struck By School Bus Identified, Still in Critical Condition

Police: Michael Wilhelm Breithaupt, 54, of Chevy Chase, was struck by a school bus in Darnestown Tuesday.

Montgomery County Police have identified the cyclist who was hit by a Montgomery County school bus carrying students in Darnestown on Tuesday. The cyclist — Michael Wilhelm Breithaupt, 54, of the 3700 block of East West Highway in Chevy Chase — remains in critical condition, according to police. The incident is under investigation. Breithaupt was struck as he was biking north on Berryville Road. The school bus was travelling east on Darnestown Road. There were 29 students from Poolesville High School on the school bus. None were injured, police and school officials said. The school bus driver, Michael Rinaldo, 53, of Germantown, was transported to an area hospital for a check-up, according to police. UPDATED: Cyclist Hit by School Bus in Darnestown

No students injured; cyclist in serious condition

(UPDATED 12:30 a.m.) For reasons still under police investigation, a cyclist traveling north on Berryville Road was hit by a Montgomery County school bus carrying students east on Darnestown Road, Montgomery County Police said in an update released late Wednesday night. Police said the name of the bicyclist—who remains in critical condition—would be released once the family was notified. The school bus driver, Michael Rinaldo, 53, of Germantown, was transported to an area hospital for a check-up, police said. Darnestown Olympian Looks To Summer 2016 Games

Check out our Q&A with Olympic kayaker Caroline Queen for more about her experience and plans for Rio.

Caroline Queen started kayaking in a summer camp at the age of nine. At 12, she was racing competitively and by 20 she traveled with Team USA to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The Darnestown, MD-native describes herself as just being “at the right place at the right time.” Though Queen didn’t quite make it far enough to medal in London, she already has her eyes on the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. “I was really not sure going into these games, but having experienced it I can understand why athletes dedicate so much time in pursuit of the Olympic games,” Queen told Patch. “I think I would like to give it another go.” Queen will be heading to North Carolina soon to go on a vacation with her mother before starting …

Congressional Candidates Discuss Jobs, Energy in Community

Though the incumbent was missing from activities, candidates met with the public to share their platforms and vie for more votes.

Nine candidates running for the sixth congressional district seat in Maryland had a chance to appeal to the public Thursday night in attempt to garner local votes in Darnestown, although incumbent Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) was not present. “One of the big things we have to accomplish [in Congress] is to be available,” David Brinkley said. “You have to be available to meet people, you have to be here tonight. The incumbent is not here tonight, but all of us are here asking for your vote.” Darnestown Civic Association President Lisa Patterson-Troike said she received an email from Bartlett’s camp Wednesday night cancelling his appearance at the event, although no reason was provided.
