Are you buying a new winter jacket? Do you have holiday lights that no longer work? Did your kids get duplicate toys this year? Did Santa bring you a new cell phone? If you have items you’d like to toss but aren’t sure what to do with them, a number of collections are taking place in Montgomery County and items can be dropped off right at the Salvation Army at 18705 North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD. You can also drop off items at Goodwill of Greater Washington at 619 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg or 4816 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville. Have any unwrapped, unused toys? Manna Food Center — Montgomery County's largest food distribution center — is lending a helping hand to more than 300 families in need during Thanksgiving week. The Gaithersburg-based food center will provide 70 pounds of emergency food assistance and donated turkeys to the community, Manna announced Wednesday. Community members can drop off turkey donations to Manna — located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg — before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and they will be passed out to families in need. “The community is instrumental in serving our clients throughout the holiday season and during the rest of the year," Manna Executive Director Minerva Delgado said in a statement. Help a neighbor in need this Thanksgiving by donating food.
The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is seeking donations to help create Thanksgiving baskets for county residents in need. Items sought include: Donations will be accepted at A Wider Circle, located at 9159 Brookeville Rd. in Silver Spring, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. between Nov. 1 and 20, 2012. Catholic Charities of DC is looking to help feed low-income Montgomery County residents this Thanksgiving.
